3 Things About Reaching Victory

"If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward."
- Martin Luther King Jr.

On your way to victory you might have to get over 3 types of people (based on 1 Samuel 1):

#1 Rivals (v.7) - These are the people that deliberately come against you. They will do whatever they can to make your road bumpy. Solution: Ignore them.

#2 Quick Fixers (v.8) - These people might even be closer to you and unaware will try to minimise your efforts and/or try to provide 'easy steps' or 'quick fixes' to your problems. Present comfort and happiness for them seem more attractive than significance. Solution: Explain you can't let go of your goal. Delayed reward is far more important than instant gratification.

#3 Misinterpreters (v.13) - These people misinterpret your efforts and use their critical analysis to bring you down. They might say that what you are trying to achieve is based on pride rather than altruistic reason. Their misinterpretation is usually fruit of the own insecurities so don't let them put it on you. Solution: Know who you are and don't let anyone put labels on you.

Stand your ground. Press on, keep going and do not give up, your victory is right around the corner (v.27).

6 Ways To Make Your Year Work

Many times the 'what' is easy to find (lose weight, go to the gym, increase income, come up with something life changing etc.), the 'how' however needs work and a lot of thought. Here are a few suggestions from my new year message 6 Ways To Make Your Year Work. Hope it will inspire you to be intentional and press on. Remember if you have a vision or a dream you have to protect it!

#1 - The majority is not always right - Many times people will convince themselves they cannot do something, then they will try to convince you that you can't either! Stay true to what you want and/or God has given you do to (Numbers 13:31-33). For more on this subject please read this post.

#2 - Be intentional -  When comes to our plans we need to be intentional and consistent otherwise circumstances, people, and/or familiarity can take us off track. (Numbers 14:1-7)

The verse above shows us 3 things that will try and steal your dreams:

  1. Circumstances. They are the bad reports.
  2. Doubters. They are the ones that carry the bad reports.
  3. Familiarity. People got really familiar with their LORD. They would complain and even think that He didn't care about them anymore. They even forgot God's promises for them. Familiarity is a killer!

#3 -  The way you see yourself will affect your destination (Numbers 13:33).
Romans 8:37 offers a solution for self image problem.

#4 - Replace "I can't", with "How can I" (Philippians 4:13).

# 5 -  Be ready to sacrifice something you love for something you love even more. Nothing significant in life will ever happen without sacrifice. The potential of the effect is directly connected to the sacrifice you are willing to make. Sacrifice is meant to be hard and challenging. Suffering will stretch you but your world will get bigger and you will become stronger (1 Peter 5:10).

#6- Look for different behaviour, not different situation (2 Chronicles 26:5). Your situation might never change. The way you see your situation however might give you new perspective and insight of what to do and even turn a problem into profit. Make sure you seek God, he always know what to do.

This is one of the ways we shape the culture in our church.

The Elisha Principle

The Elisha Principle Here are a few thoughts from the life of the prophet Elisha that could help us accomplish what we want in life. I have called it 'The Elisha Principle'.

1 - Persistence pays off. In 2 Kings 2:1-6 we read how persistent Elisha was. He followed Elijah wherever he went. Even though Elijah kept on saying "Stay here Elisha!". There's was just no way Elisha would leave. Was Elijah perhaps making things more difficult to Elisha? Was he testing his character and willingness to serve? Note that during their journey from Bethel to Jericho and from Jericho to the Jordan there were no records of miracles. It was just plain stuff, no wonders or mighty displays.

From Genesis to Revelation God seems to reward persistence. He rewards those who persist on seeking Him diligently (Hb. 11:6). See also Gl. 6:9, Js.1:12, Rm.5:3-5 and plenty more here.

Here is the thing:I want you to be the most persistent follower of Jesus the world has ever known! Seek Him and you will find what you are looking for.

2 - Vision pays off. In 2 Kings 2:7-10 we see that Elisha knew exactly what he wanted and he asked for everything! - This is confirmed in verse 10. Let me ask you a few questions:

Do you know what you want? Can you actually see it? (v.10)
and if so...
Are you settling for less?  (Eph. 3:20)

Most people think they know what they want or come up with some sort of a place holder they call vision in order to look ok. When things get tough however, and I do mean real tough, they give up. Remember Js. 1:6-8, I highly recommend you make this text part of your meditation time.

3- Focus pays off. Are you getting distracted? Is your job diverting you from your calling? Is your personal comfort distracting you? How about fear? Our present culture is controlled by it. In verse 10-13 we see that Elisha had focus. He kept his eyes on the target at all times. He wouldn't let go! Note that he would not leave Elijah's side until he saw (v. 12) what he was looking for and took possession of the blessings he was seeking (v.13).

Are you focusing on what you want? Can you see it?

Most people say yes to both of the above questions but when you look into their lives they are just everywhere. Are you all over the place? If so the answer to both questions is NO. You cannot focus if your life is cluttered. How many things we are missing out because we are failing to see.

Why didn't the other prophets in this chapter get something from God, after all they also knew Elijah, they served God? Here is why, because they did not follow the same example as Elisha. Elisha set himself up for success because:

1) He knew what he wanted (Vision)
2) He did not get distracted (Focus)
3) He had the guts to persist (Persistence)

Powerful Prophet + Powerful Lessons = Powerful Life. God is no respecter of people (Ac.10:34), He shows no partiality. What He did then He does now! What He did for Elisha he can do for you.

Understanding Faith

Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.
 2 Corinthians 4:4 (NLT)

Do you believe that God can unleash his power in your life in such a way that the dormant potential in you will be released allowing you to lead a life full of purpose and abundance?

Pastor, do you believe that your church can unleash God’s power in such a way that you will see your community changing before your eyes like never before? The 1st Century Christians did.

Parents, do you believe that God can bring back your child?

Do you believe that God can heal your deepest traumas and set you free from that disease that the doctors told you it would never go away?

Note that the above verse is not talking about the minds of 'the bad people', 'the non-church goers'. It talks about ALL UNBELIEVERS -  including those sitting in church every Sunday.

The moment we choose to see the glorious light of the Good News and understand this message about the glory of Christ, we (the church) will start moving from the side line to the centre. Ephesians 1:23 says, The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence. The moment we understand the power we carry and start living in faith (Hb. 10:38, Rm. 1:17), we will start moving the mountains that try to stop us (Mt. 21:21).

Where to start

1. Start by realising that there are things in this world that have the potential to blind you, these things also are all temporal and have no eternal value. Money, power, pleasure and control are strong influences that have the potential to blind you.

2. Address unbelief (worry, doubts, lack of faith, atheism). Unbelief was the only thing that truly amazed Jesus (Mk. 6:6). Worry and faith walk in opposite direction. Faith and doubt cannot coexist.

Do the Faith Test

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON’T BELIEVE

1. You forget God’s Word. You won’t read it! You ignore 1Co 15:58.

2. You forget that it’s a privilege to serve. When you don’t believe everything becomes too much trouble. Being helpful around the house, serving in church, giving people lifts, hosting home groups, cooking for people, visiting them in hospital, being a true friend... everything becomes too much trouble. Jesus asked Peter to demonstrate his love for him by serving His people (John 21:17).

3. You forget where you belong. You belong in God’s house Rm 12:5.
Do you even value the people you do life with? Do you take them for granted?
Without this understanding you will always start something but never finish. You start something in your community or church but soon run out of steam because you are moved by the air of emotions, when that runs out your are back in the same lazy state you started when in fact you should finish in an even greater way than when you started. Don't give out excuses not to be involved in the body of Christ (His church) Luke 9:57-62, 14:16.

Do you know why people start giving excuses in the above verses?

Because they did not believe that Jesus was who he said he was. THE SON OF GOD! Do you really think that they would dare to even think about giving out lame excuses to the Son of God? Yet so many of us are doing that right now. Your excuses are always proportional to your level of understanding.

4. You forget you have to give up everything (Lk. 14:33). What do you have right now? Would you be willing to give that up? Give up what you cannot keep in order to gain what you cannot lose.

Now What?

1. Understand that the level of your impact is directly proportional to the price you are willing to pay and the faith you have is directly proportional to the sacrifice you’ve made.

2. Aggressively remove unbelief from your life. Read the Gospels and the promises God has for you in his word and claim them!

3 Thoughts About Happiness

I've found that happiness is the result of three things:

1. Perspective
Happiness does not depend on how your life is arranged. It depends on how your mind is arranged. We create much of our unhappiness, we see what is wrong rather than what’s right. We focus on what we don’t have instead of what we do have. Happiness is the result of your perspective not the product of your circumstance.

2. Attitude
We have what we need to be happy. What we struggle with is our attitude. Have a positive attitude and celebrate each day. Every day is a gift from God! Replace the 'I’ve got to'  mindset with the 'I get to' attitude. You don't say, “I’ve got to go to work!” - No, the right attitude is “I get to go to work!”

3. Decision
Happiness is something you decide ahead of time. You can choose to either be merry or miserable. Blessed or depressed. Delighted or dejected. When you wake up in the morning you have to decide what kind of day you want to have. Your happiness is not dependent or your circumstances. It’s dependent on your choices. You are as happy as you decided to be therefore give yourself permission to be happy every day. Don’t wait for a holiday or a special event, Psalm 118:24 says,"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Quickly recognise, reject and eject negative thoughts. Happiness is your right, use it. Choose happiness.

Emotion vs. Passion

Being around people that are passionate about the same things that you are, will fuel your passion. Nothing great is ever accomplished and sustained without passion. Emotions might offer a starting point but they will not produce sustainable results. Where emotion is a strong feeling, passion is an intense desire.

Therefore same passion = more passion. Being around passionate people will generate more passion.

Emotion vs. Passion

Emotion says: “I will!” but then doesn’t (or if it does it can’t sustain it when emotions fade).
Passion says: “I will!” and it does more than what’s required.

Emotion gives some when convenient.
Passion gives it all consistently.

Emotion serves until it becomes uncomfortable.
Passion serves despite of discomfort.

Emotion has a strong sense of obligation.
Passion has a strong sense of purpose.

Emotion will lie to you.
Passion will always be true.

Emotion doesn’t count the cost and gives up.
Passion counts the cost and chooses to pay the price.

What are you passionate about? If people cannot tell you what your passion is you haven't got one. Why not start by being passionate about God's house (The Church)? If Jesus was passionate enough to build it and die for it, it must be something that we should also be passionate about and set it as the top of our priorities.

11 Thoughts About Grace

  1. God's grace (favour) is unmerited, outrageous and unfair.
  2. God's grace is a gift. You don’t work for it. You don’t earn it. You don’t deserve it. Like any gift you can accept it or reject it. And once you accept it, it’s yours.
  3. Through grace God made a way for you to have life through His death. God's main concern is not that we are sinners in desperate need of forgiveness; His greatest concern is that we are dead in desperate need of life. (John 10:10, Ephesians 2:1)
  4. Through grace we can be the visible representation of an invisible God. Jesus didn’t come to help you be good and serve God, he came to live his life through you. (Galatians 2:20)
  5. Through grace the task of being a Christian is no longer impossible. You understand that Jesus didn't come to get you out of hell into heaven, but to get himself out of heaven into you.
  6. Through grace there is nothing you can do to make God love you more, there is nothing you can do to make God love you less.
  7. Through grace you are as righteous as Jesus. (2 Corinthians 5:21)
  8. Through grace it’s not about what you do but who you are in him (Romans 5:17). The question is not how God can make you righteous? A better question would be:“How can God make Jesus become sin?” Jesus became sin so that you could be clean.
  9. Through grace we can clothe ourselves with Christ and approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. What is our greatest time of need? Isn’t it when we are failing? (Hebrews 4:16)
  10. Through grace we can find forgiveness. C.S. Lewis put it brilliantly when he said “repentance is not something that God arbitrarily demands of us; It is simply a description of what going back is like”. For the prodigal son that meant going back to a life of love, joy and abundance.
  11. Through grace you can predict your future, for through Jesus You have a hope and a future.
The conclusion could easily go like this:

Repent now. That will determine what your life will look like.
Ask for grace. That will empower you to keep going.

Are You A Christian? ...Really!?

While many who claim to be Christians whine about how early or long the church service is. How 10% is too challenging and too much to give. How depressing it is not to be able to buy that new car or that new pair of shoes. How being a man is so much hard work. This ex-addict, hard core criminal turned businessman, then preacher and last but not the least, missionary in Africa, is doing amazing things for God.

Do me a favour, go and watch this movie immediately and then think about your Christian life (or lack thereof)! It has changed my perspective of a lot of things, including who I used to see as my heroes.

The Narrow Gate

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. Matthew 7:13

Wide = having a larger distance from one side to the other than is usual or expected.

Jesus made it clear that the going of being a follower is tough. The road to convenience and comfortable living is wide. What do we do to make sure that we are moving towards the narrow gate?

Strategy To Enter Through The Narrow Gate

1- Determine To Be Chosen

For many are called, but few are chosen
Matthew 22:14

In the Parable of the Wedding Party everyone was invited to the wedding, but the invitation went out in two parts. The 'A list', the respectable people were invited first, but they did not take the invitation seriously. They only pretended to accept. They lied. The result is that they didn’t show up.  The invitation was then sent out to the 'B' list which was everyone else including the street people, prostitutes, etc!

Being chosen is a decision we make. It is a commitment to listen to the voice of the one who chose us in the first place.

2- Determine To Follow

My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
John 10:27

This has got to do with your determination to keep going. Following Jesus goes like this:

LISTEN
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

COUNT THE COST
But don't begin until you count the cost. Luke 14:26-28

GIVE UP
So no one can become my disciple without giving up everything for me. Luke 14:33

You cannot miss the narrow gate if you are wholeheartedly following Jesus and since we are at it, who are you leading towards the narrow gate? Because if you are a follower, this is not an option, it’s a must.

We Walk Together

The church exists to build people up and since one is too small a number for greatness, here at D7 Church we choose to work together. We are building the church through teams of passionate skilled individuals. Still there is plenty of room for learning and improvement.

Here is the thing about D7

• We exist for the broken NOT the perfect
• We care for each other and we put others first
• We do whatever it takes NOT whatever it’s easy
• We do whatever it's needed NOT whatever we want
• At D7 Church Jesus is the centre of everything we do. But we don’t use Him as an excuse NOT to do anything. Faith without works is dead.

We believe that God has not called us to be normal and fit in, He has called us to STAND OUT!  How do we do this? Together. We are a bunch of people that believe that our God is big and absolutely anything can be accomplished as long as we don’t mind who takes the credit. We are not ordinary, we are extraordinary. We are not conventional, but remarkable. We are everything but normal.

We are chosen by God for a higher calling, God's instruments empowered to do His work and speak out for Him, to tell others of the difference He has made in our lives. (1Peter 2:9-10)

The result? Life change. Testimonies of people being set free from addictions, depression, mental illness, the occult etc, all in a short period of our existence as a church.

That is why
I believe that as Christians progress is our best product. We should constantly be thinking, 'How can I do this better?', 'How can I get closer to Him?' , 'How can I keep track and measure my spiritual growth?'.

Listen to our current series - A Love For the House here.

Grapes And Giants

Numbers 13 is a great chapter in the Bible. It describes how God's people dealt with some real problems. The Israelites were told to spy out the land they were about to enter as promised by God. Out of 12 people only 2 thought as God did. The result: 10 people talked 3 million out of their promise and destiny. Ten people melted the heart and stole the faith of millions of others. The Bible says that only Joshua and Caleb had the same heartbeat as God's.

Here is the thing;

God will show you what you can have before you can obtain it. He will allow you to see it before you can have it,

BUT,

God will want to know what you have to say about what he has for you.

And that is the tricky bit:

I've seen what he is doing in our church BUT I don’t have the money nor the time to contribute.

I know God wants me to serve in his house, because Jesus came as a servant. BUT I don’t have the time to do it... I'm way too tired, busy, and is too much hard work.

God has showed me that I need to get planted in His house, BUT I  fear commitment.

And here is the deal:

Where there are promises there are also problems. The bigger the grapes the bigger the giants.

There is however a reason why God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline. There is a reason why the Bible says that the godly are as bold as lions and that our confidence will be richly rewarded.

What has God been showing you lately; a vision, a need, a challenge, a change? What about your response, has it been based on faith or fear? Remember: Where there are grapes there are also giants, where there are promises there are also problems. But He has given us the power to overcome, in Him we are more than conquerors.

Audacious Faith

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see.
Hebrew 11:1

Nothing is impossible with God and Nothing is too hard for Him. However, in order to see the impossible we have to be willing to hold on to what we believe with perseverance and determination. We will also have to refuse to fear when facing impossibilities.

Hebrews 11:1 describes faith. Hebrews 11:2-38 demonstrates faith. Note that only one verse focus on the theory of faith, the rest of the chapter deals with the practicalities of faith. That is 37 verses of faith being put to work. Faith is practical. Hope grabs hold of nothing, faith holds on to it until it becomes something.

Consider these words of Jesus:

“According to your faith will it be done...” (Matthew 9:29)
“If you have faith and do not doubt...” (Matthew 21:21)
“Have Faith in God,” (Mark 11:22)
“Anyone who has faith in me will do even greater works,” (John 14:12)

Activate your audacious faith:

1 - Read Hebrews 11:1-38 (The Hall of Faith). Read it out loud! Faith comes by hearing the word of God.
2 - Pray for mountain moving faith. Pray for the spiritual gift of faith.
3 - Do life with people of faith. Please note that this does not mean that you will neglect your friends and the people in your life that need Jesus. We were called to be light and salt. We were called to be IN the world not OF the world. One of the signs that your faith is increasing will be the fruit around you. Found people, find people.
4 - Fast. This will give you an edge when fighting the enemy and the things of this world. Fasting is a powerful weapon. Fasting can definitely make your faith stronger in a shorter period of time. The price is higher, but If you are looking for a shortcut, this is it.

Do you have a testimony were you got results by activating your faith?
What are you doing right now that requires faith?

Our Best Days Are Ahead

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18

What is the unseen? Did you know that:

1- For some people D7 Church is the highlight of their week. Greatness is not what great people say about you. Greatness is what ordinary people, who can benefit you nothing say about you.

2- Church is their only hope. The reason for people to relocate just to join us wanting to be part of an awesome team and a church with a big vision.  People that came to Christ through our hard work are now reaping the benefits of a new life.

3- We are building an awesome church. People wanting to give to our church because they have recognised God's work throught us. D7 Arena, we can’t lose sight of it. If you can see it you can have it. D7 is a church with a big vision.

And since breakthrough might be just around the corner what should we do? Here at D7 Church we do the following:

1) We keep on showing up.

At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
Galatians 6:9

Half of the battle is showing up. History is not kind to people who go back.  People who haven’t realised going back is never better will always struggle to find a reason to keep going in the face to adversity. The Millions who went back from the brink of Canaan did not write the next chapter of the Bible, but Joshua and Caleb did.

2) We expect great things to happen.

To expect is to believe something will happen.

“ ...‘I am the LORD... Is anything too hard for Me?’”
Jeremiah 32:27

3) We press on.

... but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
Philippians 3:13-14

There is only one way and that is FORWARD! We've burned the bridges, locked the door and thrown the key out. We are in this until the end, we are pressing own with sharp focus towards the prize.

4) We make a habit to look through the eyes of faith.
20 Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think.
Ephesians 3:20

Check these verses out:

Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully.
2 John 1:8

Blessed is the man who perseveres.
James 1:12

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
Galatians 6:9

We can't not afford not to persevere!

Extravagant Love

If you had all the perks  available plus all the money in the world, would you be satisfied with heaven even if Jesus was not there?

What does it mean to love God?

Maybe it's time to make a life defining new year's resolution.

The Third Option

If you have lived long enough, chances are you have already experienced some sort of drastic change, challenge or calamity. Joseph faced all three all at the same time.

He found his fiancé pregnant with a baby that wasn't his. His whole world and lifelong dreams were shattered in a snapshot of a moment.

Joseph had two options:1) Break up immediately or 2) Have his fiancé stoned to death.

God however had a third option - marry her! (Matthew 1:20-23). God's guidance helped him to make the best decision.

How many times have you found yourself in a difficult situation, just to find yourself doing the same old things again in order to escape the hard decisions. Why not seek the third option and look for God's guidance, he will help you make the best decision.

Light

Jesus referred to himself as "the light of the world" (John 8:12). Whenever we see the lights of Christmas, let them remind us that they recall Christ, our true Light. Join us is this awesome series where we explore the true meaning of Christmas and why light represents his presence, protection and guidance.

Earthly Kingdom vs. God's Kingdom

There are two different worlds and two different worldviews. You can either see yourself as part of God’s Kingdom or an earthly one. The problem sometimes is with what we see. We have to zoom out a little and see beyond the natural, we have to see beyond what we can see and touch, we have to see beyond our personal limitations and even beyond our current level of influence and size of our world.

Take the David vs. Goliath's case for instance. If David became a king by watching sheep imagine what you can become by looking after the people God has entrusted to you. What people you might ask? Look around you and beyond yourself and you will see plenty of hearts starving for  love, a place to belong and concrete answers. God's Kingdom is all about people.

Check out this interaction between Goliath, God's people and David:

Goliath (1 Samuel 17:8)  - "Aren’t you the servants of Saul...I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.”

God's People (1Samuel 17:11) - When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

David (1 Samuel 17:45) - "I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."

we see in the above verses that:

Goliath saw servants of man, David saw the army of the living God.
Goliath saw frighted losers, David saw dead meat.
Goliath focused on the things he could see, David focused on the invisible.
Goliath had an earthly kingdom mindset, David had a God’s kingdom mindset.

Here is the punchline:

Who had victory?
Who came out of the battle with their head still attached to their body?

A kingdom mindset will shape your perspective and your perspective will determine your destination.

What perspective do you have? What are you living for? What actions are you taking towards your decisions?

The answer to the above questions will determine the outcome of your battles.

Chose to be like David. Be kingdom minded.

Kingdom Builders

Your focus will determine what you see, your priorities will determine your direction and what you are doing right now is setting you up for what is next.

What if you could simplify your focus to determine your priorities, defining your direction, pointing you towards what you actually have to do.

What is worth doing? A large chunk of our life is made up of things we do which is a reflection of who we are.

What if you could streamline your lifestyle towards something that really matters! What if you could spend your energy on something that will bear fruit 100% of the time!

But how do you get hold of such a thing and how do you implement such an idea? Is there such a thing as a fool proof system that will simplify things, bring forth fruit, abundance, satisfaction, meaning, purpose, excitement, everything that we desire and much more?

How do I live an exciting, full life as opposite to an empty and meaningless one?

Princess From A Prostitute

You have to read this post, it brought tears to my eyes. Real stories of real lives.
